The U.S. dollar is the official currency.

Drinking Water

The tap water in Puerto Rico is generally safe to drink. It meets U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards. However, some areas may experience occasional issues due to aging infrastructure or natural disasters. In such cases, it’s advisable to use bottled water or a water filter.

Electricity

In Puerto Rico, you’ll find two types of power plugs and outlets: Type A and Type B. Here’s what you need to know: Type A plugs have two flat prongs on either side of the plug. They are mostly used in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Central America, China, Japan, Taiwan, the Philippines, and Thailand.

Type B plugs have a round prong in the center with two flat prongs on either side. They are also used in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Central America, Japan, Taiwan, the Philippines, and Thailand. Type B outlets can accommodate either Type A or Type B plugs.

Puerto Rico operates on a standard voltage of 120 V and a frequency of 60 Hz. If you’re traveling from another country, check if your electronic devices are compatible with Puerto Rico’s voltage.

Language

Spanish is the most popular language spoken in Puerto Rico. Over 95% of the population uses Spanish in education, business, and daily life contexts. It is also the official language of Puerto Rico. While the difference from other Spanish dialects is not very pronounced, Puerto Ricans can understand other Spanish speakers from different countries.

English is another official language, although it falls short in popularity. Less than 10% of Puerto Ricans speak English.

National Dish

The national dish of Puerto Rico is Arroz con Gandules. This flavorful rice dish combines rice, pigeon peas, and pork, all cooked together in the same pot with sofrito (a savory seasoning blend). Arroz con Gandules represents the island’s rich culinary heritage, influenced by West African, Spanish, and indigenous Taíno ingredients and cooking methods.

Time Zone

Puerto Rico operates on Atlantic Standard Time (AST) throughout the year. AST is four hours behind Coordinated Universal Time (UTC-4). Notably, Puerto Rico does not observe Daylight Saving Time (DST).

When to Visit

Most tourist prefer going between December to March: Pros: Fresh weather, empty beaches, and local festivals. Cons: High season for tourists, with hotel rates averaging around $330 per night (add about 30% more for beachfront stays).Highlights: Pleasant weather with average highs in the low 80s. Christmas celebrations extend into January.
